How Does Ultrasound Work?
Ultrasound generates an image using sound waves. During an ultrasound procedure, our professionals at Rocky Mountain Veterinary Ultrasound will take a small probe called a transducer. This transducer emits sound waves from the front. Then, these sound waves will pass through your pet’s body in a harmless, painless manner. One of the main benefits of using ultrasound is that it requires no radiation.
The ultrasound machine will generate an image based on the various densities of the material through which it passes. Sound waves move more quickly through solid materials than light materials. Therefore, solid material (such as bone) is going to show up white while lighter material (such as liquid) will show up dark. This is used to help us get a picture of what is happening underneath the surface of the skin.
What Problems Can Abdominal Ultrasound Detect?
One of the main ways that we can apply ultrasound is to the abdomen. The abdomen is a large space with numerous organs. One of the potential issues we might detect is something called a cyst. A cyst is a pocket of fluid that grows gradually over time. In some cases, the liquid inside of the cyst might be infected with disease. In this case, we call this an abscess. Both of these issues can be detected using ultrasound.
We can also use abdominal ultrasound to detect tumors. While we might not be able to tell if the tumor is benign or malignant using ultrasound, we will be able to use this image to help a surgeon remove it.
